A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.
The disaster took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” stated the national leader.
The leader announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the previous year. This rail line was intimately linked to his government's economic vision for the southern region.
Another massive train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a notable increase of its role in civilian projects. They were built at an accelerated pace, surpassing forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked significant questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an immediate pause in the building and running of all such projects.
This pause was proposed pending a thorough safety audit. The party stated that the loss of life "demands swift accountability."
In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these national projects.
